ESL pull-out is a 1 hour, small group instructional program with 30 minutes for reading and 30 minutes for math. Our reading block begins with a read-aloud and a song or poem to reinforce rhymes and promote fluency. During reading time we use a variety of activities, games, and instructional strategies to develop literacy concepts, phonological awareness, decoding, letter/sound relationships, and spelling patterns. Students also practice making, reading, and writing high frequency words. During shared reading, students use literature to practice comprehension skills and strategies.
During Math time we will be working on academic vocabulary, numeracy, and fact fluency. We will use manipulatives and hands-on activities to develop numeracy skills and number concepts.
As the ESL teacher, I collaborate with each child's classroom teacher to monitor progress and academic achievement.
