Character Education at LVES!
Viking Values is the name of the Character Education program currently in place at LVES. The Viking Values for the year are:
August: Trustworthiness
September: Respect
October: Responsibility
November: Fairness
December: Caring
January: Citizenship
February: Honesty
March: Courage
April:Diligence
May: Integrity
Each month, we highlight the character trait through the use of literature, role playing, and classroom activities. Students are recognized for outstanding shows of the Character Traits through the "Value"able Viking of the Month recognition.
September's Viking Value of the Month is Respect. There are many authors making the claim that respect is a trait becoming less and less prevalent in classrooms and playgrounds. Not at Lago Vista Elementary School! We will spend this month emphasizing traits of respect, specifically good manners. Please help us teach this importatn trait at home! The following suggestions for teaching respect are from EducationWorld.com:
1. Work on one skill at a time.
2. Give immediate positive feedback for manners success.
3. Be tolerant of children's mistakes, but do not overlook them.
4. Give a noncritical prompt when children forget social rituals.
5. Set a good example-- manners are not a one-way street.
