Where each child spells at his or her independent level!
The Beginning of Each Week
This year we are using a new spelling curriculum called Sitton Spelling. Research has shown this method is successful in helping students become life-long spellers and not to just learn "good enough" spelling skills for the Friday test. You can learn more about the Sitton Spelling program at www.sittonspelling.com/

Another part of our spelling program is linked directly to writer's workshop. As students go through the writing process they are taught to circle words they are unsure of how to spell. On Monday of each week, students go through their writing binders and create their own spelling lists using these words. A few high frequency words (word wall words) are also added to everyone's list. On most weeks, I will also require students to add a few content area (math, science, or social studies words) to their lists as well. This type of spelling curriculum is a natural way to differentiate spelling and ensure that each child is improving phonemic skills at independent levels.
During the Week
Students will be required to practice spelling words throughout the week both in school and at home for homework. We practice our spelling words in a variety of ways, including hands-on/tactile, singing and chanting, and repetition. Here are some ways to help your child practice spelling words at home:

Say/Spell - Say each letter out loud as you write

Clap/Chant - Clap and chant the spelling of a word out loud

Body Spell - Use your whole body to "act" out the letters of a word

Shaving Cream/Sand - Spell each word in a tactile way

Rainbow Words - Use multi-colored pencils to practice words

Ransom Words - Cut letters out of a magazine and glue on paper to spell your words
Assessment
Students will take a spelling test each Friday.
