This year we are using a new spelling curriculum called Sitton Spelling. Research has shown this method is successful in helping students become life-long spellers and not to just learn "good enough" spelling skills for the Friday test. You can learn more about the Sitton Spelling program at

Another part of our spelling program is linked directly to writer's workshop. As students go through the writing process they are taught to circle words they are unsure of how to spell. On Monday of each week, students go through their writing binders and create their own spelling lists using these words. A few high frequency words (word wall words) are also added to everyone's list. On most weeks, I will also require students to add a few content area (math, science, or social studies words) to their lists as well. This type of spelling curriculum is a natural way to differentiate spelling and ensure that each child is improving phonemic skills at independent levels.
