The CX team of
Duncan Hall and Megan Mumford won their second straight District Championship on Thursday in CX Debate. They will advance to the UIL State Meet, which will be held on Monday and Tuesday, March 16-17, on the University of Texas at Austin campus.
The sophomore team went 3-0 in the prelim rounds, beating teams from Florence, Jarrell and Rogers. Duncan and Megan also tied for first with 88 out of 90 speaker points, which meant they shared the Top Speaker Award for the district.
In the semi-finals, Duncan and Megan beat Salado in a 3-0 decision to guarantee their second trip to the State Tournament. In the finals, they beat Rogers in another 3-0 decision. One of the comments written by one of the judges was that the "team is ready to compete for a State Championship."
For the year, the team went 28-3, with a second place finish in the Salado Tournament That Teaches, Number One Seed in the Pflugerville Pfall Pfling, second place overall in the Round Rock Invitational, and a tournament championship in Burnett.
The teams of Conner Baker/Taylor Hillhouse and Amira Elsouki/Ashley Wallace were the other two Lago teams. In their first District competition as teams, they did well, finishing 5th and 6th place respectively.

The Lago Vista High School Academic and Debate teams competed in the 15th annual Round Rock High School Invitational Meet on Saturday, January 31st. The competition was challenging, as there were over 70 schools represented. However, Lago Vista came away with several medals and awards.
In Math,
Parker Durham came in 6th place overall in Geometry.
Angelica Guile came in 4th place in Algebra II, and
Dylan Wheeler came in 2nd place overall in Algebra I.
Krystal Rodenbeck's Ready Writing essay was ranked 2nd out of over 60 essays.
In Speech and Debate,
Karina Erickson advanced to semi-finals in Informative Speaking.
Amelia Tate-Looney also advanced to the Octafinals in Novice LD debate.
In CX Debate,
Megan Mumford and Duncan Hall advanced to the finals before losing to Smithville. It was an excellent round, and the judges deliberated over the decision for over 15 minutes after the round was finished. Their record now stands at 24-3 for the year.
The CX debate teams of
Hall/Mumford, Ashley Wallace/Amira Elsouki and Conner Baker/Taylor Hillhouse will compete at the District competition on Thursday, February 12th. Hall and Mumford are defending District Champions.

LVHS CX teams travelled to the 5th Annual Bulldog Invitational Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 24th in one of their final debates before District. The team of
Megan Mumford and
Duncan Hall won the
championship in the Varsity Division, and
Megan Mumford was awarded
Top Speaker for the tournament.
Duncan Hall was the third highest rated speaker out of 64 students. With this tournament victory, their season record now stands at 19-2.
Conner Baker and
Taylor Hillhouse also competed and went 2-2, which put them in 12th place out of 32.

UIL Speech and Debate team had a very strong showing in their first tournament of 2009 against 23 other schools in Blanco last weekend.
All teams recorded at least two wins, with
Sierra Vernon and
Amelia Tate-Looney finishing 3-1 in Novice LD debate.
In CX debate,
Duncan Hall and Megan Mumford finished 6th place out of 25 teams with a 3-1 record.
In Novice CX debate,
Taylor Hillhouse and Conner Baker came in third place overall, advancing to the semi-final round before losing to Bandera High School.
Karina Erickson spoke three times in Extemporanous Informative Speaking. Her first two speeches were ranked number one, and she finished fourth place overall out of 22 speakers.

LV Debate team competed in the Salado Invitational tournament on Saturday, December 13th.
Duncan Hall came in 3rd place overall in Informative Extemperaneous Speaking.
Megan Mumford also came in 3rd place overall in Persuasive Extemperaneous Speaking.
Victoria Hood came in 5th place overall in Prose Interpretation.
The CX Debate team of Duncan Hall and Megan Mumford came in 5th place overall.
